Notes:  Big-leaf hydrangeas must not be pruned at any time of the year as it will harm their ability to bloom. It is advisable to refrain from pruning this type of hydrangea entirely. If any parts of the plant were affected by winter conditions, they can be cut off in the spring when the location of new growth is visible.

To ensure reblooming hydrangeas produce new-wood flower buds, maintain strong growth throughout the summer months. Use a granular rose fertilizer in early spring and repeat in late spring after the ground has thawed. Avoid fertilizing after late July to prevent interference with the plant's dormancy. The "default" color for big-leaf hydrangeas tends to the pink/red tones, and that is the color they will display in neutral (pH 7.0) or higher soil.
